Software License Activation

When you run Actin Viewer for the first time, it will bring up License Tool as shown in the figure below. Using this tool, you can add a new license (in online mode or offline mode), remove/deactivate license or activate a trial license.

Online License Activation

If the system on which license is being activated is connected to the Internet, then you can perform online activation. Steps for "Online Activation" are described below:

  1. Click on the "+" button on top to add a new license.
  2. This will add a new row, Select the product for which license is being activated
  3. Enter the license code provided by Energid in the second column under "License Number"
  4. Click on the "Activate" button to activate your software.
  5. This will bring up a message box indicating that the activation was successful

Online License Deactivation

If the system has the application installed and the license was activated on the system using the "Online License Activation", then it should be deactivated using this method. Steps for "Online Deactivation" are described below:

  1. Run the application "licenseTool.exe"
  2. Select the "Product" for which license has to be deactivated (Note: You can deactivate a license in online mode, only if it was activated in a online mode)
  3. Click on the "-" button on top to Remove or Deactivate the license

Trial Activation

To activate a trial version, leave the License Number field empty, and click on "Activate Trial" button as shown in the image below. A 60-day trial period then begins. You can activate the full version anytime during the trial period by launching the License Tool application (licenseTool.exe) and entering a valid license number and following the "Online" mode of activation.

Offline Activation

Offline activation is a one-time process. You should be able to run the software without internet connection as long as you have a valid license. We recommend that you activate and run Actin Viewer on a computer with internet connection. However, if you wish to run the software on an offline computer, you will need to activate your license via offline activation process. Offline Activation is a three stage process:

  • The first stage is to generate an "Activation Certificate" on the offline system (SystemA)
  • The second stage is to use this Activation Certificate and generate the 'Validation Certificate" on another system that is connected to the Internet (SystemB) - The third stage is to use this "Validation Certificate" to complete the process of activation on the offline system. (SystemA)
    The steps for Offline Activation of License are described below.

Steps on SystemA (System that has to run the application, which is not connected to Internet or the Offline System)

  1. Insert a USB or an external storage device into the system
  2. Run the licenseTool application
  3. Click on the "+" button on top to add a new license.
  4. This will add a new row, Select the product for which license is being activated
  5. Enter the license code provided by Energid in the second column under "License Number"
  6. Click on the "Activate Offline" button
  7. This will generate an "Activation Certificate" and will bring up the "Offline Activation" dialog, displaying the generated "Activation Certificate" in the text box on the the left side of the UI
  8. Click on the "Export Certificate", this will bring up a "Save Certificate" window, which allows the certificate to be saved as a text file Note: Save this file to a external drive such as USB so that this could be used on the system that is connected to the internet to generate the "Validation Certificate" to complete the process
  9. Keep the Offline Activation dialog open
  10. Alternately, you can click on "Copy To Clipboard" button, which copies the "Activation Certificate" to the clipboard, you could create a new text file and paste the copied certificate from the Clipboard and save the file on an external device

Steps on SystemB (System that is connected to Internet)

  1. Now, on the system that has an internet connection, navigate to https://www.energid.com/resources/viewer-offline-activation in a web browser.
  2. Open the export certficate that was saved in a file and copy the contents to clipboard
  3. In the web page, under the "License" text window, paste the "Activation Certificate" from the clipboard
  4. Click on "Activate" button
  5. If the "Activation Certificate" is a valid one, the License text window will be updated with the "Validation Certificate" and you will see a "Activation Successful" message on top of the page
  6. Now copy the contents from the License text window into clipboard (Note: Ensure you do not enter or delete any character by mistake, and use "Ctrl-A" to select the contents as you may have to scroll if you use a mouse for selection)
  7. Copy the contents from the clipboard into a new text file and save the text file on an external device such as USB

Steps on SystemA (System that has to run the application, which is not connected to Internet)

  1. Insert the USB that has the "Validation Certificate" saved
  2. In the "Offline Activation" dialog, click on "Import Certificate" on the right side of the UI
  3. This will bring a "Open Certificate" dialog
  4. Select the "Validation Certificate" file saved in USB
  5. This will display the "Validation Certificate" on the left side
  6. Click Ok
  7. If the "Validation Certificate" is valid, you will get a message indicating that the "Offline Activation was successful"

Validation

Offline Deactivation

When a license has been activated in Offline mode, it has to be Deactivated also through an Offline mode. The steps for deactivating the License in this mode are described below. Once you deactivate, you will need to activate again to be able to run the software.

Steps on SystemA (System that has to run the application, which is not connected to Internet)

  1. Run the licenseTool application on SystemA which has the application installed and which is not connected to the Internet
  2. Select the product for which the License has to be deactivated
  3. Click on Deactivate
  4. This will bring a "Offline Deactivation" dialog displaying the "Offline License Certificate"
  5. Click on "Export Certificate" and save the certificate in a text file on an external USB device
  6. Keep the "Offline Deactivation" dialog open

Steps on SystemA (System that has to run the application, which is not connected to Internet)

  1. Click Ok in the "Offline Deactivation" Dialog
  2. This will complete the process of Deactivation of offline license

The license file *.lic will be saved at this location ~/.energid on Linux & %PROGRAMDATA%\Energid\licenses on Windows. To deactivate the license we can start the license Tool which will show the present activate license and then click Deactivate or Deleting the *.lic and license.xml files from the above location will deactivate the license.

FAQ

While Activation of license if we see any error like - Failed to open license library or Failed to open license library- invalid encryption method as shown in the below image

  • on windows delete the contents of folder %APPDATA%\Energid and remove license.xml from folder %PROGRAMDATA%\Energid\licenses
  • on windows, if the steps above do not fix the issue, please verify that Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package is installed on the system. If not, you may download the same from here.
  • on linux have to delete the contents in ~/.energid folder

and try activation again.
